In the area of Darjeeling district in the hills and at the border with Nepal much human trafficking takes place. Young women are being seduced into relationships or men known to them are promising a good job in the city. Sometimes young guys are starting relationships via mobile phone or Facebook. Sometimes poor families are selling their children for a few thousand rupees to survive. Sometimes women are drugged and kidnapped. They end up in brothels and red light areas in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi or other cities. The key is prevention through education and raising awareness.

We raise awareness in villages by providing information about the methods of trafficking and try to make parents and young women alert. We have a Nepali movie which shows them how it can happen. We also give advice on how to stay on the safe side when going to the big city for jobs. We are planning to arrange meeting more often with women to raise awareness and encourage discussion about this issue.
